Patterns

Create tiny little works of art with miniature punchneedle embroidery. Our folk art patterns follow the tradition of early American primitive hooked rugs, which feature charmingly simple and out-of-proportion designs. They work up quickly, in only an evening or two.

These patterns make great gifts. Create pins to wear, or frame them for display. Use them to decorate small boxes. Applique them onto a favorite jacket. Use them as rugs in a dollhouse. Or find yet other ways of using and showing off these intriguing pieces.

All patterns include the following:

  • Design drawn onto a fabric backing (it's ready to punch - no need to transfer the design)
  • Pinback (for projects you decide to make into a pin)
  • Detailed instructions for the project
  • General instructions on how to use the punchneedle
  • General instructions on how to make a pin and how to frame the piece
  • Color photograph for reference
  • Color chart for wool thread (DMC Medicis)
  • Color chart for cotton floss (Weeks Dye Works, Gentle Art, and Anchor)

Here's what else you'll need to work on your project (see Supplies for additional information)

  • A high-quality punchneedle. Most patterns use a 3-strand needle.
  • A 4" embroidery hoop with an interlocking lip (e.g., Susan Bates Hoop-La). The lip is critical for holding your fabric very taut, something that is essential for successful punching.
  • Thread or floss (based on the color chart included with each pattern, or using your own choice of colors)
  • A pair of small, sharp embroidery scissors
  • Good lighting

Having trouble finding the wool threads or overdyed cotton floss? Thread packs for each pattern will soon be available. Email for more information.
